Translated by Ana Giménez from the original.
The thoughts tuned into our minds are mainly from the past or the future. As if we had a double life, what we do in the present moment goes undetected while our minds make up perceptions and thoughts from the past or the future.
Mindfulness is a new technique to learn how to live the present moment.
As, precisely- if we live the present moment- the slept and useless part of our brain activates itself and once activated, vitamins are generated to help us to live facing reality in full consciousness.
So, once we start praying, we learn to live the present moment. Remain silent, enter relaxed inside yourself and be aware of the thoughts that cross your mind. Learn to have mental hygiene once you are still, let those mental images flow without scolding at them. Don´t worry if you get distracted; come back to the present again and again, till your brain learns to obey you.
It´s advisable to have what they call an “anchor” where to look at. For Christians, I suggest to look for two images which you may love and have a deep meaning for you. One image of Christ and the other of the Virgin Mary.
When our mind is distracted at the beginning, we can look and allow ourselves to be looked by those images.
We, Catholic people, have the appeal of the tabernacle, really salutary for us, indeed.
If you are well organized, the best thing is to develop a daily habit of keeping in silence, either in a church or in a private space at home.
Some people talk about something else added to what has been mentioned above. That is, to try to be in the presence of God in our daily life. When walking to work ,at any time. In the presence of someone who loves us tenderly.
If you get used to doing that every time you remember, you´ll give a giant step forward.
I don´t lie when I say that its´s necessary to be firm in your commitment in practice. Without persistence, we can´t enter safely into the second mansion.
Some of you do yoga, zen or nature walks. No problem at all, once it’s understood that they are the starting point on Christian prayer, and not an end in itself; as Christian prayer can never do without a personal relationship and dialogue with the God of Jesus Christ.
In the Internet or in books, there is plenty of information about mindfulness skills. You can see the psychiatrist Javier Garcia Campayo´s videos on You Tube, as well as interviews to him . Enough of this, unless you want to have further more knowledge.
Lots of courage “strong friends of God” We can have mental hygiene and educate our brain.
Nowadays there is a trend back to silence, tired as we are of so much “noise”
(as some of you say)
Pablo d´Ors who is a priest, has written a short book with thousands of copies sold. Biography of silence. It can be helpful.
