Translated from the original by Ana Giménez.
It is on Life, chapters 5 to 9 where we discover the various aid measures Teresa looked for on her transition from vocal prayer to meditation prayer. I include a list:
. Spiritual reading
. Praying in nature (see what was written yesterday)
. Look for solitude moments
. Frequent Confession and Communion
. To grow in virtues, following our own knowledge; not to be unkind
to anyone
. Turn to Saint Joseph
. To pray with images
. To know how to listen to the Lord´s call
. Avoid companies which move us away from God
. Don´t ever stop praying
. Accept limitations and illnesses
. Recognise that we live between God and the world
. Look for dealing with people who seek God,”back each other up”
. Allow ourselves to be looked by God
. Teresa advises to have two hours of mental prayer daily
. To trust in His Majesty
. Come to Mary Magdalene
. To look for Christ within me, especially where He was alone, tied to the column and in the Garden of Olives.
. To accept the torment of not been able to control our imagination.
. To think of Christ as the man he was
. To read Saint Augustine´s Confessions
. Till we reach to experience His frequent presence, It may be useful the reading of the Gospel.
Some of the above, need further explanation in the future.
The objective is easy to explain: to get to know Jesus Christ as best as possible as well as the mysteries of His life, from His Sacred Humanity. To get to know someone, needs firm determination and a lot of time. That´s the same with Him. To meditate is to assume His life, His thoughts, His actions and make them ours, incorporate them in our life. I am afraid that many spiritual lives are paralysed as this step is not properly made. To become friends of Jesus takes a while. A bit of patience. Without practical and real changes in our way of living, there is not progress in our spiritual life. Once this leap is taken, everything will be “softer”.
